international mother language day, jackson heights on Flickr.
Yesterday morning on my way to the Roosevelt Avenue station, I noticed this setup right across the (horrendous) pedestrian plaza for International Mother Language Day. I looked it up, and realized that there it is quite a significant date, especially for Bangladeshis, whose flag is in the display. When the government of Pakistan decided in 1952 to make Urdu the official language, when many people living in Eastern Pakistan spoke Bangla, students protested and were killed. This marked the start of Bangladesh’s route to independence. UNESCO first commemorated the day in 2000, promoting multilingualism and multiculturalism.
