This morning, there was a horrible elevator shaft accident at the building next door to my office which is home to Y&R and Wunderman, along with other ad agencies. As a matter of fact, the space we had before moving to another office on the same floor was overlooking the gap between buildings, so we’d see all the production artists while they worked. From about 10 o’clock this morning we heard sirens and I found out about the news from good ol’ Twitter. As the day progressed, we found out that someone had died and the building had been evacuated.
When I went out around lunch, I bumped into an old friend who I went to college with and works in the library department at Y&R. He was stuck outside and was waiting for someone to bring his jacket to him. He said that the elevators were really old, and since he works on a low floor, he often takes the stairs.
It reminds of when, back in the summer, the elevator in my building, I got on with a coworker and the door closed, we felt a thud, and the door opened, but only halfway. As my coworker and I rushed out, there was another passenger in there who said that he didn’t mind - he was staying. It makes you think about the everyday things that you never think twice about. Elevators can be dangerous, and being stuck (even for a moment) is VERY scary.
